| What is it?
There are many complex answers to that, but simply put it is how we now describe the difficulty experienced by between 10% and 15% of people with average to high intelligence in learning, by conventional methods, the skills required for written communication. |

A very intelligent dyslexic child once told me that it seemed to her that reading and spelling were secrets that the teacher had passed on to everyone else when she had been away from school. | |||
| Even in today’s high tech. world, written communication is how we are judged by our peers. If we were judged by our ability to read music or to draw pictures then a different section of us would be perceived to have problems. |

Perhaps more importantly, what is it not? Dyslexia is not a “disease” to have and be cured of. It is a kind of mind, very often a gifted mind. There have been many famous, productive, creative dyslexics. Albert Einstein, a man universally accepted as a genius, was dyslexic. So too were Thomas Edison (prolific inventor) and Leonardo da Vinci (painter and inventor extraordinaire). And so are Tom Cruise and Richard Branson, both of whom have enjoyed more than a little success in their chosen fields . These people, and many more, show that dyslexia need not be a barrier to success. | |||
| If you are dyslexic, this is the kind of mind you have. It is yours for life and you can teach it to work better and better. And you can congratulate yourself on its strengths and creative abilities. |

| No-one knows for sure what causes dyslexia, despite many theories. No-one has yet discovered a cure for it, despite many claims to have the ultimate answer for you. But do not despair, because Dyslexia Teacher will give you tips and teach you the skills to help you cope with dyslexia.
